Cookham mums win netball trophy in early Mother's Day tournament

On the eve of Mothers’ Day, over 140 mums competed in the fourth annual Inter-PTA Netball Tournament at Braywick Leisure Centre.

The team representing Holy Trinity CoE Primary School lifted the trophy and won the cash prize for their children's school PTA.

It was a close final between two Cookham teams, with Trinity Titans beating Cookham United, representing Cookham Rise and Cookham Dean schools, by 13 goals to 10.

The social tournament on Saturday (March 29) was organised by M2M Events, a business offering events for parents.

M2M founder, Nicky Cox, said: “I’m delighted that 14 teams have signed up to take part in the Inter-PTA Netball Tournament, representing schools from Maidenhead, Marlow, Cookham and further afield.

“Every year we see new schools joining the tournament, which is great, and the team names get better every year, like the Borlase Blazers and Juniper Jets.

“I love the event atmosphere, which is so welcoming, and it's brilliant to see the sportswomanship of the players.”

Third place went to Juniper Jets from Juniper Hill School in Flackwell Heath, who beat Danesfield Divas from Danesfield School, Marlow by 12 to 5 goals.

Juniper Jets’ goal defender Claire Russell-Smith was 'player of the tournament'.

The event saw seasoned league players competing with mums who haven’t played since their school days, in a quick-fire tournament while kids stood on the sidelines cheering.

England netball coach Debbie Spindlow led a dedicated training session in the run-up to the event, and Gina MacGregor hosted ‘Back to Netball Maidenhead’ sessions for teams to hone their skills before the event.

Estate agents, Oakwood Estates, contributed the cash prize for the winning team and said they were 'delighted' to support the event.
