Matt Angell has said he’ll cherish the memories he’s made during his time at Stag Meadow after making a shock departure from the role of first team boss this week.
Angell stepped down from the role on Wednesday, with assistant boss Rob Webb taking over his first team duties with Adam Barnard moving into the role of assistant boss.
The news caught most Windsor & Eton fans by surprise with the club having made an encouraging start to life in the Combined Counties Premier Division North.
The Royalists had been as high as third after the opening few matches but slipped to fifth after scoring late on to draw 1-1 with second placed Broadfields United on Saturday.
Angell was Windsor & Eton’s first manager after the club was established just over two seasons ago. He led the first team to promotion from the Thames Valley Premier Division at step 7 in his first campaign and then refreshed and improved the squad once more to lead them to the Combined Counties League Division 1 title last season.
At one stage last season the team also went on a 19-game winning streak in all competitions and was also at the helm when they competed in the FA Cup for the very first time.
Praising his commitment and dedication, the club’s statement on Wednesday said he’d ‘forever be a part of the club’s history’.
Senior club chairman Mark Cooper said: “When Matt was appointed at the formation of our club two years ago, he faced the daunting challenge of assembling a squad just one month before the season began – with the clear objective of securing promotion.
“Not only did he achieve that, but he went on to lead us to the CCL Division One title the very next season.
“Matt has been an outstanding leader and figurehead for this club, and his presence will be missed.
He will always be welcomed back with open arms.”
Stepping up to take on the role of first team boss is Rob Webb, who himself has played a key part in the club’s recent successes alongside Angell. He said it was a real honour to be given the opportunity.
"Having been part of this club since its formation, I know how special it is and what it means to our players, staff and supporters,” said Webb. “I’m excited to build on the progress we’ve already made and to continue driving this team forward together.”
Cooper added: "Rob has been an integral part of our coaching team from the very beginning, and he fully deserves this opportunity.
"Over the last month, he has shown his ability to lead the side with confidence, professionalism and passion. The players and supporters already hold him in high regard, and I have no doubt he will continue to drive us forward.”
The split with Angell appears to be entirely amicable, with the former manager posting his thanks to everyone at the club following the news.
“Firstly, I want to thank everyone involved at Windsor & Eton to be given the opportunity by Coops to lead the club has been amazing but to have the opportunity to gain back-to-back promotions was a real memorable experience and one I will cherish now and in the future!
“I’m glad to have played a small part in where they are today, thanks to all the players who have the played for the club, once you’re in you realise how special it is. The staff that took the plunge to work for me at step 7, absolute friends for life.
“The future is bright for you all with Webby and Adam Barnard leading the side alongside all the amazing coaches and medical team members you have at the club! The fans! Keep supporting this great club, I’ll be there with you sure.
“For me now; I will focus on my family and my work that has sometimes taken a back seat to football, but I will always be there to support the club where needed in the future.”
On the field, the Royalists suffered a disappointing exit from the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup on Tuesday following a 2-1 home defeat to Reading City.
Toby Raggett had given the home side the lead on the half-hour mark but second half strikes from Muhamadou Ceesay (52') and Mckoy Palmer (55' pen) saw City advance to the next round.
Windsor & Eton return to league action at home to Harefield United on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
