A pilot suffered 'significant facial injuries' and was taken to hospital on Tuesday afternoon after a light aircraft crash at White Waltham Airfield.

At 3.44pm, the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) received a call from South Central Ambulance Service over reports of an incident involving an aircraft at the airfield on Waltham Road.

Upon arrival crews discovered a crash involving a light aircraft and one person was placed in the care of the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and South Central Ambulance Service.

A Thames Valley Air Ambulance spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a critical care response vehicle was dispatched to provide advanced critical care at an incident at White Waltham on Tuesday.”

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance said the pilot had 'sustained significant facial injuries and was taken by ambulance to Wexham Park Hospital'.

Due to leaking fuel, crews also contacted the Environment Agency and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board, before using sand to absorb the fuel and making the electrics on the aircraft safe.

Mark Green, the deputy airfield manager at White Waltham Airfield said the incident involved a single-seat biplane aircraft.

They added: "The pilot was taken to hospital by ambulance where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

"The aeroplane is privately owned and is believed to be damaged beyond repair.

"The incident was wholly confined within the airfield boundary.

"The case of the incident is not known at this time and is being investigated by the Air Accidents Investigation Board (AAIB), who will report in due course on its findings."

Fire crews from Maidenhead and Windsor were at the scene, alongside the four-wheel drive vehicle from Maidenhead Fire Station and one officer.

One officer from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service was also in attendance.

The crews were at the scene for approximately one hour.
