Boss Scott Davies is confident that it’s ‘mission accomplished’ for Slough Town after they all but secured their National League South status.
The Rebels have maintained a healthy gap between themselves and the relegation zone but a resounding defeat on the road to strugglers Weymouth left some looking over their shoulders.
Slough’s player manager said his side were keen to right a few wrongs heading into Saturday’s home tie with bottom side Aveley and his players obliged – delivering a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Davies told the Express: “For me, the boys, and everyone involved at the club, it was all about the result.
“We could have played the best game of football we’ve played this season but if we would have lost I wouldn’t have been pleased. It was just about getting the three points.
“We’ve highlighted Aveley as the game to get the three points which takes the pressure off hugely. Overall, was it a great performance? No. But in terms of the result it was perfect.”
The win leaves Slough 10 points clear of the relegation places with four games to play.
And while mathematically the club are still not safe, Davies said it would take a miraculous set of results to send his side down from here.
He said: “I just can’t see it happening. It’s mission accomplished as such but now we want to finish as high as we can in the league and finish on a good run of form.”
Davies added another free-kick against Aveley to his impressive highlight reel from 2024/25 which has seen him score four set pieces and an audacious strike from his own half against Chesham.
His latest effort, whipped around the wall and in off the post, helped land the 37-year-old a player-of-the-match award and a spot in the National League South’s Team of the Week.
And as Davies continues to thrive in the twilight years of his playing career, he sees no reason why he will be hanging up his boots anytime soon.
He added: “From my personal point of view I feel like I still feel I can add value to the team. I’ve got a lot of good people around me that have always said they’ll tell me when my days are over.
“I’ll definitely be an option as a player next year but hopefully I won’t make as many appearances which means I’ve got my recruitment right.
“At the same time, I don’t feel my age. I know 37 is my age but I’ve been really fortunate with injuries that I’ve only missed five games in 11 seasons through injury.
“My injury record is very good and I think that’s given me a chance to add a bit of longevity to my career. I’ll be an option because I still feel like I can add something but also it saves me an extra wage going out and bringing another player in.”
Slough make the near 400-mile round trip to face Torquay United on Saturday who still have aspirations of winning the league in a fiercely competitive National League South.
Davies said he will be treating the fixture with the utmost respect, particularly considering the battle at the top of the division.
He added: “We want to keep the integrity of the league so against the teams that have something to play for it will only be right for us to pick a strong side, especially in the next two matches.
“It’s pretty much everyone’s cup final (at Torquay). I think that’s why their manager probably gets frustrated because everyone ups their levels when they travel to Torquay.
“We won’t be sitting in, we won’t be defensive. We’ll go and take the game to them because that’s what we know best.
“It’s a great game for all involved so let’s bring it on.”
Slough finish the season with games against Chesham United and Hampton and Richmond which Davies added will give him an opportunity to hand minutes to some of the squad's future prospects.
He added: “We’re obviously going to have a bit of a turnaround in terms of the squad. We’ll probably freshen it up and make a few changes between now and the end of the season and then again in the summer.
“For us, it’s just a good chance to get eyes on people in a situation where there’s not as much pressure. Some of the young lads will probably make their full debuts. People like Ollie Spicer will definitely start a game between now and the end of the season.
“We can definitely start an Ollie Spicer in any game for the rest of the season and he’ll probably hold his own and maybe catch a few eyes because he’s an exceptionally talented young player."
