Defending the greenbelt will be one of the key priorities for Beaconsfield MP Joy Morrissey as she embarks on her second spell in the House of Commons.
Mrs Morrissey saw off the challenge of the resurgent Liberal Democrats as she won by 5,455 votes with a 38.8 per cent vote share.
The American-born Conservative politician acknowledged it had been a ‘tough election’ for her party and she had not taken her re-election for granted in the constituency, which serves Marlow and Burnham.
Mrs Morrissey told the Advertiser: “I really tried to honour every promise I made in 2019 and I was really focused on being a local champion and a good local MP.
“I know a lot of MPs want to go on and do other things but I just wanted to focus exclusively on local issues and focus on fulfilling all the local promises I made in the 2019 election.
“I just relentlessly worked on my local promises and pretty much nothing else.
“When I got to the election, I could stand on my record and say these are all the things I’ve promised you, I’ve kept every single one of my promises.”
Mrs Morrissey has been an outspoken critic against development on the greenbelt in the constituency, including the controversial Marlow Film Studios proposals.
The new Labour Government looks set to take a more interventionist approach to speeding up development in Britain.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced this week that planning decisions on major infrastructure projects will be taken nationally, rather than locally.
Labour is reportedly considering appealing rejected plans for a new data centre at the Woodlands Park landfill site in Iver.
Mrs Morrissey responded: “This decision threatens our community and our environment. I will fight them every inch of the way.
“They have run roughshod over local opinion already. I expect they will come next for the Marlow greenbelt with the Film Studios application which was rejected.
“The battle to save our greenbelt starts today.”
The Beaconsfield MP also reiterated her plans to ‘stand up for British values’.
She added: “We heard again and again on the doorstep that people want us to stand up for British values, they want us to be proud of being British, they don’t want us to be silenced anymore.
“That’s why we saw the rise of Reform across constituencies you never would have thought would have voted Reform. Labour will have to acknowledge that.”
