Reassurances made after Topshop becomes latest to leave Slough

Topshop in Slough High Street closed last weekend, making it the second major retailer to leave the town centre in two weeks.

The clothes store shut on Saturday, a week after the High Street’s River Island closed its doors and months after BHS went out of business, prompting concerns over Slough’s shopping district.

However, town centre manager Colette Makambila remains positive.

She said: "The closure of BHS, River Island and Topshop, three of Slough's big name shops, has undoubtedly created some uncertainty.

“However, I am hopeful and confident that we will be able attract new names with the same standing.

"The future of Slough High Street is bright, with a transformation town regeneration programme that will drive economic development, thus increasing footfall and sales."

Cllr Joginder Bal (Lab, Farnham) said: "We are all concerned about this and we have future plans to attract businesses to come back to Slough's centre.”

He said The Curve, the new hotel due to be built in the town centre and plans for offices to move to central Slough will drive investment.

He added: "We will be doing everything we in our power to get businesses to come to Slough."
