Universes collide as Maidenhead Comic Con descends on Braywick Leisure Centre

05:00PM, Monday 07 October 2024

A who’s who of iconic film and TV characters joined more 1,000 people as Maidenhead Comic Con descended on Braywick Leisure Centre on Sunday (October 6).

Universes collided as Marvel’s Captain America was spotted stopping to pose for pictures with Harley Quinn from Batman and a watchful Stormtrooper.

Event organiser Zoe Crofts, 48, said the day had gone ‘really well’ with ‘lots of happy faces’.

Zoe has helped run Maidenhead Comic Con for three years.

The event sees beloved characters and attractions return every year but also tries something new.

This year was the first children and adults had the opportunity to try a wand-making workshop.

“The kids adored it, the adults wanted to do it, it was heaving – that went down really well,” Zoe said.

Children and adults donned costumes and had a chance to try their hand at lightsabre training.

Wonder Woman – who Zoe said was ‘a good friend’ – turned up for photographs with fans.

Zoe added: “The queue for Wonder Woman was huge, everyone wanted to get a picture with her; children and adults.”

Lightning McQueen and Mater from Disney Pixar’s Cars parked up outside the Leisure Centre.

And there was also a surprise appearance from Transformers hero Optimus Prime.

Maidenhead Comic Con has run for four years and has built up a regular following.

Discussing why cosplay was so popular, Zoe said: “I think people get a huge amount of enjoyment out of it.

“You look at Wonder Woman yesterday, she made dreams come true for a lot of those children - and that’s heartfelt.”

This year, 25 free tickets were given to families with autistic children in Maidenhead.

Zoe said Maidenhead Comic Con makes a special effort to accommodate everyone.

She added: “My 100-year grandma comes to the events and she loves it - Deadpool will literally hold her hand going around the event.

“It [Maidenhead Comic Con] is there for everyone of any age, it’s just a good feel vibe; everybody wants to support everybody, I absolutely love it.”
