Plans submitted for market-style M&S foodhall at Stafferton Way Retail Park

Marks & Spencer has submitted its plans for a market-style foodhall at Stafferton Way Retail Park.

The retail giant dealt a major blow to Maidenhead shoppers last month when it announced the planned closure of its High Street store.

The retailer has been based in the town centre for more than 50 years and Advertiser readers reacted with dismay to the news the High Street store would be shutting.

The company is now looking to create a new 16,000 sqft foodhall, currently part of The Range store, which it claims would be ‘one of the most modern in the UK’.

Marks & Spencer is hoping to open the store in mid-2026.

An in-store bakery, coffee counter and click & collect service for online orders are among the features planned for the foodhall.

Earlier this year, the council gave the green light to proposals to split Unit 4 at Stafferton Way Retail Park, formerly occupied by Homebase, into two separate retail units.

This would allow The Range to continue trading from its unit, while a second unit would be open under another occupier.

Planning documents submitted to Windsor and Maidenhead council said Marks & Spencer is looking to demolish the existing garden centre at the site to make way for its new foodhall.

New double-glazed doors are proposed for the front of the building as well as new glazing on the eastern side of the building to provide a new shopfront.

The plans also include a new servicing and mechanical plant to the east of the building which could ‘incur a degree of noise when in operation’.

An environmental noise impact assessment, submitted as part of the plans, said this would have a low impact and would result in ‘no adverse effects’ on nearby homes.

A planning statement submitted by Iceni Projects, on behalf of Marks & Spencer, said: “The works are associated with the introduction of a new operator within the retail park that would provide economic development by way of job creation and consumer choice, while also providing a sustainable design solution by way of making best use of existing built form.”
