Couple thank Wexham Park Hospital staff for saving baby girl by raising £6,000 with charity walk

A couple from Burnham have raised almost £6,000 through a charity walk for Wexham Park Hospital as a way of saying thank you to staff who helped save the life of their 7-month old daughter Lea.

Chris and Lorien Nash, of The Green, were part of a group of 30 who set off from Ealing Town Hall at 9am.

The group walked the 20 miles to Wexham Park Hospital in Wexham Street to raise money for the Special Care Baby Unit.

"For us it is a way of saying thanks to the unit for everything," said 29-year-old Lorien.

"It was so touching to see so many friends, family and colleagues turn up.

"We are so thankful and grateful to the unit."

A year ago, Lorien was told she was pregnant with twin identical girls, but at a routine scan in early September she was told they were unable to find a heartbeat for the smaller of the babies, Cerys.

On September 3, Lea was delivered six weeks early by emergency caesarian section and weighed 5lb 4oz.

Her lungs had not fully developed and she required assistance breathing via a ventilator for the first few days of her life.

The money raised from the walk will go towards improving the environment of the unit.

"We want to improve parents' experience when their babies are on the unit during what can be a very stressful time," said consultant Dr Rekha Sangkavi.

"We will be able to do whatever we can to make it easier for them."

The current total stands at £5,600 but it is expected to reach £6,000 once all the donations have been received.

The walk was held on Sunday, April 12.
