'Inspirational' Forest School teacher found dead

The ‘inspirational’ assistant headteacher of the Forest School, Winnersh, has been found dead.

Joe Holyer's body was discovered close to Dover Castle on Thursday morning.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Mr Holyer was described this week as a man who dedicated his professional life to his students and colleagues.

He joined the school as a history teacher in 1986 and received a senior leadership role with responsibility for child welfare in 2002.

Keith Quine, headteacher, said: "Joe dedicated his professional life to students and colleagues at The Forest School. His impact was truly profound and the heartfelt grief among students and his colleagues has been a direct outcome of the incredible regard members of The Forest community feel.

"Two former students have made contact in the last hour talking about how truly inspirational he was and putting on record his influence on their decision to enter the teaching profession. I will miss him tremendously."

Last September Ofsted judged the school 'outstanding' in a number of aspects that were led by Mr Holyer.

Mr Quine said his deep sympathies went to his immediate family and friends.
