Promotion-chasing Henley smash Maidenhead’s unbeaten record

HENLEY Tennis Club’s mixed team put an end to Maidenhead 4ths’ unbeaten record this season to boost their own Berkshire League promotion hopes with a 4-0 win.

The opening rubber saw David Hunte and Millie Hallam take on the visitors’ second pair in a high-quality contes. After sharing the sets 7-5, 3-6, the Henley duo held their nerve to secure the match in the championship tie-break.

Fi Huggard and James Cudd delivered a dominant display against Maidenhead’s first pair, racing to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Hunte and Hallam followed with another commanding performance against the second pair, conceding just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win.

The final rubber saw Huggard and Cudd complete the clean sweep, closing out the tie with a solid 6-3, 6-4 success. The win moved Henley to the top of Division 7.

In the Oxfordshire League, Henley men’s B team went down to a 6-2 defeat at Cholsey B.

Gordon Stoddard and Adam Wright endured a slow start but responded strongly in the middle stages of their matches. Against Cholsey’s B pair they rallied to win the second set, while against the A pair they claimed the opening set and dominated the tie-break 7-1. However, decisive final sets went the way of the home side as Henley faded late in both encounters with final scores of 3-6, 7-6 and 6-3, 3-6.

The second Henley pairing of Dan Barr and Matt Langridge also produced some high-quality tennis in two competitive matches despite losing 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2.

In Division 1, Henley A went down to a 7-1 defeat at table-topping Woodstock A on their artificial grass court. The pairing of Max Miles-Thomas and Mike Whorrell earned a set against Woodstock’s second pair. Henley currently sit mid-table in the league with three matches of the season remaining.
