Youngsters discuss why they should be ‘proud to be Slough’

Members of Slough Youth Parliament (SYP) discussed why they should be ‘proud to be Slough’ on Wednesday.

The group heard from Naveed Ahmed from Goldteam Recruitment, which is based in Farnham Road.

Businessman Naveed spoke about the challenges facing businesses in the borough, including the living wage, the EU Referendum and the possible expansion of Heathrow Airport.

SYP members also heard about some of the cultural, leisure, transport and housing regeneration happening in the town over the next few years.

Some of the challenges identified by young people were creating more apprenticeships, the negative perception of crime and the rising cost of living, particularly affordable housing which they highlighted as an area of concern.

Strengths discussed included Slough's premier location, diversity, community cohesion, job opportunities and high performing secondary schools.

SYP member, Joseph Jones, 14, said “This meeting changed my perspective on Slough and made me feel more positive about the town.

“Naveed's story was inspirational and showed that there are opportunities on offer.”
