Clive Jones to step down as Wokingham Borough Council leader

Twyford and Wargrave have a new Lib Dem MP after former Wokingham Borough Council leader Clive Jones gained the redrawn Wokingham constituency for his party.

The villages have had former Prime Minister Theresa May as their MP for the past 27 years when they fell within the Maidenhead constituency, but have crossed over the border following a boundary review.

Mr Jones received 25,743 votes, ahead of Conservative Lucy Demery with 17,398.

Reform UK beat Labour into third place with 5,274 votes for their candidate Colin Wright. Labour's Monica Hamidi received 3,531 and Green Merv Boniface received 1,953.

Turnout was 72.19 per cent.

Sonning has also moved from Maidenhead to a newly-created constituency called Earley and Woodley.

The new seat was won by Labour's Yuan Yang, who narrowly beat Conservative Pauline Jorgensen with 18,209 votes to 17,361.

Lib Dem Tahir Maher was third with 6,142, followed by Green Gary Shacklady with 3,418 and the Social Democratic Party's Alastair Hunter with 784.

Turnout was 63.21 per cent.
