THE River Thames, one of Britain’s most treasured natural and cultural landmarks, is facing growing environmental and infrastructure challenges — from deteriorating bridges and locks to declining water quality and loss of wildlife.
To address these issues, the River Thames Society will bring together all those who care for our river to listen, protect and restore it for future generations.
Throughout its 60-year history the River Thames Society has shown innovation and leadership.
It was responsible for the creation of the Thames Path and the River Warden Scheme and has championed a whole variety of restorative projects along the river.
It is the “Voice of the Thames” embracing a “whole river perspective” and ideally positioned to steer a timely drive for restoration.
Lady Victoria Borwick, chair of Visit England and vice-president of the society, said: “The River Thames is known throughout the world as a place of beauty and the home of recreational river pursuits including the university Boat Race, Henley Royal Regatta and many more.
“It is the setting for The Wind in the Willows, Three Men in a Boat and so much more. It is iconic, it is the artery that feeds our capital city and should be properly maintained for all to enjoy.”
However, the river’s wellbeing is increasingly at risk due to lock and bridge closures, a shortage of resident lock keepers, increased pollution and effluence, limited access points and uncontrolled development.
These problems collectively affect how the Thames can be used, enjoyed and sustained.
The new initiative, led by the society’s Middle Thames Branch (MTB), will act as a hub for collaboration and action — connecting boating clubs, conservation groups, heritage projects, local residents and all interested parties to share knowledge, co-ordinate efforts and lobby for positive action. It will:
l Advocate for the river and its stakeholders.
l Lobby responsible authorities for effective management and policies.
l Bring together local groups to collaborate on projects.
l Highlight critical issues affecting the Thames and work to solve them.
Greg Wilkinson, the branch chairman, said: “This is about uniting everyone who loves the Thames.
“Together, we can amplify our voices and ensure that the river continues to thrive — not just for us — but for generations to come.”
Members of the public, river users and community groups are invited to join the River Thames Society and help protect this vital waterway.
