Plans for a £49m A&E and assessment centre at Wexham Park Hospital were showcased to the public at the Observatory Shopping Centre in Slough yesterday (Wednesday).
Members of the Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which took over Wexham Park in 2014, were at the High Street shopping centre to hear shopper's feedback on the plans.
The new department will contain separate children’s and minor injuries units, as well as 36 individual rooms for major injuries.
The building would also house a 34-bed combined assessment and ambulatory care centre used to treat people who require care but may not need to stay overnight.
"It's not good for patients to stay in hospital if they don't have to and it's expensive for us," said department director of communication at Frimley Health, Nicola Wesson.
The project will expand the capacity of the often overstretched hospital.
Ms Wesson added: "Two years ago we were receiving 250 to 350 people a day. Now we're receiving 350 to 400."
Subject to planning approval, construction is expected to start in spring 2017 and finish by spring 2019.
