There was a nod to the past as well as a toast for a bright future at a Slough allotment open day.
The Stoke Road and District Allotment and Garden Association welcomed members of the public to its site, near Lismore Park, on Saturday as it also recognised the efforts of one of its most dedicated volunteers.
The Mayor of Slough, Cllr Arvind Dhaliwal, was among dozens who turned out to see the association’s former treasurer Gwen Thompson rewarded for decades of service by being made honorary life president.
Trevor Allen, the association’s current treasurer, who is also secretary of the Slough Allotment Federation, said: “Today was an open day for National Allotment Week, but it was also a chance for people to see what we do.
“People can drive past can think it just looks like a prison or something, so it was about letting people in to see what is it we do and also what goes on behind the scenes.
“But we had also talked for a long time about how to reward Gwen’s long service and so when we decided to make her honorary life president it seemed like a good day for it – and we want to start doing more like it too.”
