1985: More than 450 people of all ages braved lashing rain to run a 10 kilometre Funathon through Maidenhead in aid of local charities.

The event, which began in Braywick Park, was organised by Maidenhead Round Table, which hoped to raise £4,700.

1990: Street theatre came to the Nicholson’s Walk shopping precinct as members of Maidenhead Youth Theatre staged a short play for children.

About 10 members of the youth theatre, aged between 14 and 17, took part in the project with a play which was their own work – set in a fantasy world where everyone was green.

1995: Pupils from Wessex County raised money for new outdoor play equipment by cycling, rollerskating and even pushing prams during a sponsored wheelie.

Six classes were given one hour to complete 20 circuits of a course set up around the school. The event raised £525.

1995: Maidenhead’s music-lovers received some welcome news as a new store opened its doors.

The Music and Video Club – offering music from Bacharach to Bach and Weller to Wagner – opened in the High Street and was officially opened by deputy mayor and classical music lover Rudi Sheldon.

2000: Members of Maidenhead Evening Townswomen’s Guild were invited to a meeting with the Royal Borough’s leader after protesting against plans to knock down Maidenhead Town Hall.

The women of the guild, who normally remained staunchly non-political, wrote to Cllr Michael Lawrence about Tory proposals to replace the building with shops and a theatre.

Cllr Lawrence said there would be a series of public meetings before any decision was made.

2000: A cascade of fireworks and an explosion of sound and colour filled the skies of Maidenhead for the grand finale of the town’s Carnival 2000.

Earlier that Sunday, thousands of visitors enjoyed the sun-filled rag regatta at the riverside, where 56 teams took to the water to raise money for charity.

2000: Pupils at Woodlands Park School were celebrating summer in a new swimming pool after their old one dramatically collapsed two years before.

The new, heated outdoor pool was still a bit chilly, but the older children were braving the elements and enjoying daily swimming sessions.
