The Slough community marked the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day with a community picnic of honoured guests in the park this week.
VJ Day occurs on August 15 each year, remembering the moment when Japan announced its surrender to the Allied forces in 1945.
Many soldiers from across the Commonwealth served in Japan, and the fighting continued there for months after victory had been declared in Europe.
The day it all ended, huge crowds of people poured onto the streets in celebration.
To honour the anniversary, 50 invited guests gathered for a community picnic held in Baylis Park on August 16 this year.
Those attending included members of the armed forces, veterans’ representatives, uniformed services, local organisations and faith leaders, along with Slough’s Mayor and Mayoress.
Wreaths were laid at the town’s main Second World War memorial in tribute to those who lost their lives.
Leader of Slough council, Cllr Dexter Smith, said: “It was a privilege to stand alongside representatives from across the civic, military and wider community to remember all those who lost their lives so that we have the freedom we enjoy today.”
Deputy Mayor Cllr Neel Rana added: “It was an honour to be involved in this important event to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day.
“It was a fantastic day and showed Slough at its best – united and with a shared community spirit.”
The event was possible due to support from multiple companies and volunteers from Slough CVS.
