Remember When Extra: Buy Local campaign to beat the credit crunch

2009: Thrilled teammates from the Brunel Day Centre in Maidenhead were celebrating after landing third place in the World Pooh Sticks Championships.

Kevin Brown, John Fraser, Nicola Surridge and Gary Teichmann – otherwise known as the Brunel Bombers – put their skills to the test at the contest in Little Wittenham, Oxfordshire.

The game, inspired by Winnie the Pooh, involves dropping sticks into a river from one side of a bridge to see whose emerges first on the other side.

2009: Amateur jockey and Maidenhead dental practice manager Sam Waley-Cohen was hoping to ride to victory on Ollie Magern at the Grand National.

Sam combined day-to-day employment at Dontique Dentalcare in St Mary’s Walk with life at the races, and had previously competed in the Grand National – he came fifth on Libertine in 2007.

He would go on to ride to victory on Noble Yeats in 2022.

2009: The Advertiser launched a new campaign encouraging readers to Buy Local and help businesses beat the credit crunch.

The newspaper joined forces with the Chamber of Commerce, Maidenhead Town Partnership and the Nicholsons Centre to give a welcome boost to the town’s economy.

It published 34 money-saving vouchers from a range of businesses.

2014: The brownies were celebrating their 100th birthday with an Olympic torch-style celebration.

Festivities for the Big Brownie Birthday were taking place across Berkshire for six months and a candle had been travelling through Maidenhead.

As well as the candle relay, each brownie unit was taking part in its own unique celebration.

2019: An audience of about 300 people enjoyed the annual spring concert at Holyport College.

More than 70 students performed in the concert, which included four choirs, an orchestra, three rock bands and a number of vocal and instrumental duets and solos.
