Remember When: Maidenhead pupils took to the stage for drama shows

1983: Maidenhead College pupils staged a production of the Pirates of Penzance.

The show’s leads were played by Paula Dunford and Elizabeth Fenton.
 

1988: Science fiction was the major theme at a mini-convention organised by Maidenhead Wargaming Club at Pinkneys Green Community Centre.

Eight different games – ranging from the simple to the elaborate – were available to play, providing opportunities for wargaming enthusiasts and inquisitive passers-by.

Figure painting and fancy dress competitions also took place.

1993: Furze Platt School’s under 13s football team won a new strip in a competition run by the Daily Mirror newspaper.

Schools were invited to collect the newspaper’s masthead as part of the competition, and Furze Platt ‘came out on top by a mile’ in its region, collecting about 3,000 newspaper headings.

1998: GCSE drama students at Desborough School were preparing to perform an adaptation of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies.

The production was part of the school’s fifth annual arts festival, offering audiences a mix of art, drama and music.

Over two nights, 10 pupils performed the classic story about a group of schoolboys marooned on an island.

1998: A man-eating plant wreaked havoc at Furze Platt Comprehensive School as pupils staged The Little Shop of Horrors.

Lead roles went to Darren Lord, Sagar Gandesha and Natalie Baldwin.

1998: Maidenhead MP Theresa May presented awards to high-achieving swimmers who took part in the 1998 Swimarathon.

A total of £18,000 was raised in sponsorship at the annual charity event, organised by the Lions Club of Maidenhead.
