The new season began for Maidenhead United Fusal with a remarkable fightback by the women’s team at London Genesis at the weekend, writes Scott Hargreaves.
New Head of Futsal, Ryan Walsh, has been quick to act across the club as he looks to implement ‘The Maidenhead Way’ throughout the futsal remit.
Describing how this process will look, Ryan said: “[We’re] trying to line up all the squads with a similar playing style and philosophy going forwards. So that across Maidenhead we’re seen to have a ‘Way’ and that’s aligned with what’s happening on the football side. [We’re in] a process of putting the system in place of what we’re trying to do on and off the court and the standards we expect.”
The Women’s side were the first of the three sides to get their competitive season underway as they came from 3-1 down in the closing minutes to draw 3-3 with London Genesis at UEL SportsDock on Sunday. Rebecca Prow scored a brace with Katie Gavin also on target.
The side have been very productive over the summer, recruiting England internationals Faye Williams and Emma Brown along with the return of goalkeeper Téa Oldroyd.
MUFC Women’s Head Coach, Diogo Luz, will continue to take charge of the side entering his second season at the helm. Luz will work closely alongside Ryan Walsh in developing the style of play transmitted through Maidenhead United Futsal and will be in the best position to do so as he features in the Men’s First tea alongside his cosching role.
The Men’s First Team are three weeks and two fixtures into their pre-season, as they enter their third consecutive season playing in the topflight of English futsal, National Futsal Series Tier One. From the two pre-season fixtures, United have secured two victories – a 6-1 victory against Tier 1 opposition and a 9-3 win against a Tier 2 side.
The league season starts on the first weekend of October as they look to go one better than a fifth-place finish last time out and secure a playoff spot in the top four. They will host Hartpury Futsal at Bradfield College, with the pair being familiar opponents across the past couple seasons. The two meetings last campaign both finished level with a 2-2 draw in January followed by a 3-3 in May.
While the Men’s development side kick off their Tier 3 South West campaign on the final weekend of September. They will travel to Westgate School to face leagues new boys, FC Cayman.
To summarise, Ryan said: “Overall, it’s been a good start to everything so far and we’re looking to continue this in training, seeing where they go well, where they go wrong, so we can adapt and work on them in training. Building standards throughout the club and then taking it into the season ahead.”
