RBWM town crier swaps royal proclamations for Innocent’s five-a-day drive

The Royal Borough’s town crier is among those featured in a major new public awareness campaign aimed at boosting fruit and veg intake.

Chris Brown took to the streets with the traditional cry of 'Oyez, oyez, oyez!' followed by proclamations encouraging people to begin their day with fruit and veg, for the drinks brand Innocent.

The new Start The Day Right campaign, launched following new research by Innocent Drinks, showed the nation is falling short when getting their five-a-day.

In response to the study, Innocent teamed up with rapper, foodie and wellness advocate, Big Zuu, to champion the benefits of fruit and veg in the morning.

They enlisted the help of town criers, the UK’s original broadcasters, to take to the streets and remind the nation to ‘start the day right’.

Ahead of the launch, Big Zuu helped the criers update their language to ensure their message cuts through to the younger generations.

Town criers are often billed as the original news alerts, shouting ‘Oyez, oyez, oyez!’ before making public announcements.

Commuters passing through Kings Cross, Victoria and Westminster heard healthy proclamations about berries, bananas and spinach before 9am on Tuesday, February 24.

Big Zuu said: “Town criers have been waking up Britain for centuries, so who better to remind the nation to start the day right with the good stuff?

“There’s something wonderfully British about shouting useful advice at people before 9am – especially when it’s about bananas, berries and feeling more alive as you kick off your day.”

Chris has been the town crier of Windsor and Maidenhead for more than ten years.

He is the Royal Borough's first town crier in a century and was chosen after a cry-off in 2012, which pitted him against three other hopefuls vying for the coveted ceremonial role.

The new Start The Day Right campaign is part of Innocent’s ongoing mission to make it easier for people to live well through the goodness of fruit and veg.

In 2025, Innocent gave away 1.3 million portions of fruit and veg by partnering with NGOs across Europe to increase access to fruit and veg.
