In pictures: Participants compete in Maidenhead pancake flipping contest

Organisers took a whisk and revamped Maidenhead’s pancake day tradition into a flipping competition in the Nicholsons Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Traditionally each year on Shrove Tuesday, businesses enter teams to battle it out at the long-standing Maidenhead Pancake Race.

However, due to a fall in entry numbers this year, organisers flipped the event on its head by changing the format and opening it up for youngsters and adults as part of a half-term activity.

Taking place from noon, the event saw participants compete to see how many times they could flip their pancakes in one minute.

Organised by Make Maidenhead, the event was also supported by the Maidenhead Festival team on the day and Jonny Walker, who compered and brought ‘life to the party’.

Speaking at the event, Lisa Hunter, chairman of Maidenhead Festival, said: “Traditionally there’s always been a pancake event in Maidenhead and this year we’ve flipped things slightly.

“It’s great to see everybody having a good time in the town centre as well.”

Spectators watched on as participants flipped their pancakes as fast as possible before time ran out.

“It’s very impressive flipping out here today,” Lisa added

Among the participants was Maidenhead MP Josh Reynolds, who managed a total of 45 flips.

A range of prizes, donated by Bonne Maman, were handed out, including aprons and tubs of chocolate spread.

The First Responder Bear mascot was also on hand to cheer on the participants.

The Windsor Pancake Race did not take place this year.
