Marks & Spencer (M&S) have revealed plans to close its Maidenhead town centre store and create a new market-style foodhall at Stafferton Way Retail Park.

The retailer has been serving the community from its Maidenhead High Street store since it opened its doors more than 50 years ago in 1973.

The current store at 60 High Street, is set across two floors, and features clothing and accessories sections, as well as a foodhall.

This week, the company has revealed it is planning a ‘significant investment’ to create a new 16,000 square-foot fresh market-style foodhall at the former Homebase site at the retail park in Stafferton Way.

In March this year, The Range opened its doors at the former Homebase at unit 4.

Last month, an application to divide the unit to create two separate units was approved by the Royal Borough.

The store ‘would be one of the most modern in the UK’, the retailer said and is part of M&S’ plan to open more than 100 new and larger food locations across the country as it ‘reshapes for growth’.

The relocation from the existing store is planned for mid-2026 in the summer, with colleagues transferring across to the new store or surrounding stores.

The new foodhall will include an in-store bakery and coffee counter, serving a range of pastries and bread.

It will also feature a range of fresh produce and fresh market specials from M&S Select Farm partner, and dedicated flower and wine shops.

The store will also have the ‘latest innovative products’, with a dedicated Click & Collect point for online home, fashion and beauty orders.

Rachel Cranwell, regional manager at M&S, said: “We are excited to share this significant investment in Maidenhead.

“Our new showstopping foodhall will be the first M&S store in renewal format across Berkshire since 2022 and will showcase the very best of M&S Food.

“Not only will it offer the unbeatable M&S quality and trusted value we’re known for, but also deliver the best possible shopping experience for our customers and of course, a touch of that famous M&S magic.

“We have a long history of serving the community here in Maidenhead and our priority has been securing a sustainable future for M&S – this investment will allow us to do just that.”

The Range has been contacted for further comment.
