A Twyford villager has pleaded guilty to fraudulently claiming benefits from Wokingham Borough Council (WBC).
Simon Clark, 32, of Broad Hinton, admitted wrongly pocketing £5,700 in housing and council tax benefits between January 2010 and March 2011.
He was sentenced at Reading Magistrates Court on Friday, January 27 to 140 hours of unpaid community service.
He must also repay the £5,700 he falsely claimed as well as a £50 contribution towards prosecution costs
Mr Clark pleaded guilty to failing to report a change in his circumstances to WBC after his earnings had increased.
Muir Laurie, director of business assurance and democratic services at WBC, said: “Hopefully anyone who is contemplating committing benefit fraud will think again when they see the potential consequences.
“We have dedicated investigation officers who work together with our shared legal team to detect and bring to justice cases of fraud."
Anyone who suspects benefit fraud should call 0800 454240.
