8 places people who give Slough a hard time don't want you to see

If you type ‘why is Slough’ into Google, its first suggestion for the most searched question adds ‘so bad?’ to the end of your sentence. The first result then points you to an article in the New York Times which says the town has a metaphorical ‘kick me’ sign plastered across its back. Even people in America are worried about Slough.

But for all the negativity, it’s also home to a lot of good people and a lot of good places. The people you might have to get out and find yourself, but here’s a start on a few places in and around Slough which might show you that possibly it’s not all doom and gloom.

Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal

Slough has a canal. And the canal has friends who often walk along the banks, clearing rubbish and trying to keep it looking nice for you to enjoy. There's also a canal festival with boats taking you on little trips. Much like Venice.

Black Park

Okay, so it’s between Slough and Iver Heath but we’re still claiming it. It has 10 miles of trackways, Go Ape and a solid 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor.

Slough Train Station

Ignore the lifetime of signalling problems and the scaffolding in the background – it’s a good looking train station. That's a handsome clock.

Kedermister Library

Housed at St Mary’s Church in Langley, the splendid library was founded by Sir John Kedermister in 1613, even before the first Kindle.

Herschel Park

Surrounded by Upton Park Estate, it’s 3.5 hectares and has received £2.7million in funding to restore it to its former Victorian glory. It’s also a Grade II listed park, which means people who know things about history will fight you for it.

The Curve

Opening earlier this year, The Curve is the new home for Slough’s Library, and also has a performance venue and museum. We were told the curvature design of the building is not down to inspirational thinking but rather the shape of the land available to the builders. There's a nice moral about success through adversity in that somewhere.

Burnham Beeches

So this one really isn’t in Slough, but it’s only 2.5 miles from Slough Trading Estate and sometimes it's not just about the destination but the journey itself. Unless you are ‘ontherazzle’, who is the proud owner of the only negative online review, labelling it ‘pathetic’ after a fiasco involving a cancelled arts and crafts event.

Arbour Park

Slough Town FC now boast one of the best stadium’s in the Evo-Stik League Southern thanks to the development of the Arbour Park Community Sports Facility. The team is doing pretty well on the pitch too.

So yeah, tell your friends.
