A new roots music trio is coming to Norden Farm on June 12 - offering a tapestry of lively Swedish polskas, Scottish reels, lilting French waltzes, toe-tapping klezmer (Jewish music) and more - all over a two-course lunch.
Firelight Trio are a roots music group who have been friends for 15 years.
It features the Fatea instrumentalist of the year 2023, Gavin Marwick, on the fiddle, joined by accordionist Phil Alexander and Ruth Morris on the Swedish nyckelharpa - a string instrument, sometimes called a keyed fiddle.
Gavin Marwick is a session musician and composer from Edinburgh. He has played at festivals, concerts, theatres and dances across Europe, North America, Asia, Australia and Africa. He is an experienced composer, inspired by musicians and cultures from years of performing.
Gavin has self-published some 200 of his tunes in a collection called Horizons. His orchestral folk suite Impressions of Galloway was commissioned for a concert bringing together the Scottish Ensemble and the Journeyman project.
Phil Alexander studied at Goldsmiths College and has a PhD in Ethnomusicology (the study of music in its social and cultural contexts). He is currently a British Academy Fellow at Edinburgh University, researching Jewish music in early twentieth-century Scotland.
Phil leads Scotland’s top world-folk outfit Moishe’s Bagel and has collaborated with musicians including the jazz tango trio Tangalgo, McFall’s Chamber, harpist Catriona McKay, folksingers Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy and their daughter Eliza, and many more.
Ruth Morris is a versatile multi-instrumentalist. She specialises in nyckelharpa, fiddle, whistle and piano. As well as The Firelight Trio, she plays with Gavin Marwick's Journeyman Project, The Galloway Agreement, The Village and The Road, Bellevue Rendezvous and her ceilidh band Whirligig.
Her recent work includes being an on-set musician on HBO’s Outlander and playing nyckelharpa on the soundtrack for Netflix’s Outlaw King.
Firelight Trio perform at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts on Thursday 12 June at 12.30pm.
Tickets are £30 and include a pre-show two-course lunch from the Café Bar.
