Fluent floor routines and well executed vaults saw St Piran’s School u11s team claim silver at the South Region Gymnastics competition in Gerrards Cross this weekend.
The six-man team, comprising four girls and two boys in years six and four, finished second on the leaderboard with a combined score of 118.5.
Year six pupil Max Kendall also achieved the highest individual score in the competition.
The competition was organised by the British Schools Gymnastics Association and attracted entrants from across the south of England.
Emma Kendall, Caitlin Ireland, Florence Wilson, Max Kendall and year four pupils Caitlin Hazelhurst and John Caen competed well on the floor and on the vaults.
Caitlin Ireland and Caitlin Hazelhurt got the team off to a great start with near faultless floor routines, while Emma Kendall impressed the judges with her tumbling, split leaps and musicality.
Max Kendall performed a complex and clean routine and John Caen recovered from an uncharacteristic stumble to finish his routine well for further points. The team then held their nerve with solid vaulting performances as Emma, John and Max all performed perfect handsprings and Florence and Caitlin cleared the box with confident straddles.
Head of girls’ games at St Piran’s, Katie Holmes, was thrilled, saying: “Given that it is the school’s first year of competing in the sport, this is a fantastic achievement, and hopes are high for even greater success next year.”
