School pupils and families in Windsor and Maidenhead are invited to join a treasure hunt-style game using a smartphone app next month.

The council has teamed up with Street Tag to offer a unique game to residents which will transform the Royal Borough into a virtual playground.

The family-friendly game encourages players to collect virtual tags placed in their surroundings such as parks, footpaths and bridleways, leisure centres and other public spaces.

Players can also add tags to their favourite walking, cycling, running, or rolling routes.

Street Tag founder Seun Oshinaike said: "We’re excited to continue forging partnerships, such as those here at the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, to help families and communities get physically active in a fun, sustainable, and accessible way.”

The game will encouraging players to be more active and get healthier, discover more about places to explore in their communities while having fun and making memories with family and friends, following its success in other parts of the country.

When it launches on June 10, three seasons of Street Tag will follow, each eight weeks long.

The first, which runs from June 10 to August 6, is for schools.

If a child attends one of the seventeen schools signed up to Street Tag so far, families can play on their way to and from school, and at weekends.

Schools will also be able to compete for points in a friendly leaderboard with prizes awarded to the top-performing schools.

The second season, also for schools, is due to run in the school autumn term.

The third season will be widened to all residents and communities across the Royal Borough early next year.

Executive director of place services Andrew Durrant said: “We’re excited to be partnering with Street Tag across the Royal Borough.

“It’s a fun, accessible and inclusive way for anyone connected to a school to get active, enjoy time outside together, while exploring some of the many spaces and places our borough has to offer.”
