(Wycombe Wanderers win 3-1 on penalties to advance to the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup final)

Player manager Scott Davies held his hand up to admit his was the worst of an ‘abysmal’ set of penalties as Slough Town crashed out of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup against Wycombe Wanderers last night (Tuesday).

The Rebels reached the semi-final stage, and their prize was a home tie against a youthful Wanderers u21s side, but their path to the final - and a potential date with Hungerford Town back at Arbour Park on April 14 - was blocked by their inability to score from the penalty spot.

In dreadful conditions, which somewhat spoiled the latter stages of this tie for the 892 crowd inside Arbour Park, the Rebels showed some character and fight to battle back from an awful start.

There were only 63 seconds on the clock when Bradley Fink took advantage of a defensive lapse and raced through to score Wycombe’s opener.

But the Chairboys could only hold that lead for 10 minutes before Slough’s Tyrese Dyce lashed home left-footed from just inside the area after the hosts put together a good move to create the opportunity.

From there, opportunities for both sides became more infrequent. The visitors struck the post in the 24th minute and Ruben Shakpoke saw an effort deflected off target in the 30th minute.

Neither team was able to fully take control of the tie in the second half either, with Slough keeper Michael Edegbe doing well to push away Joe McCallum’s 49th minute strike.

Dyce might have had a second, but his goal bound effort was blocked a few minutes later, while substitute Erion Zabeli’s celebrations for putting the ball in the net in the 74th minute were quickly cut short by the linesman’s flag.

With the wind gusting and the rain now teeming down, no further chances came either side’s way, so the tie was decided on spot kicks.

Davies stepped up first for the Rebels and failed to find the net. Dan Roth also missed while Jaiden Drakes-Thomas smashed his spot kick against the crossbar.

Harvey Walker did find the bottom corner for Slough and though Wycombe also missed twice in the shootout, they put away three of their kicks to advance to the final against Hungerford next month.

The final will be staged at Arbour Park on Tuesday, April 14.

Davies posted afterwards: “Absolutely abysmal penalties, mine being the worst by some way.

“I knew the wind was strong but my word.

“Tough game, horrendous conditions and a bitter was to go out in what was a very competitive game. Thanks to all those that braved the weather.”

For Slough the focus is now on finishing as high as they can in the National League South. After back-to-back 2-0 away defeats to Chelmsford City and Farnborough they visit promotion hopefuls Ebbsfleet United on Saturday.
