About 16 people showed up to discuss their wellbeing at Cox Green Community Centre for a pilot ‘walk-and-talk’ group on Saturday.
The Cox Green Walk & Talk Group pilot saw people attending walk for 30 minutes around Cox Green, then return to talk to each other for 30–60 minutes.
The pilots are being run by Sunil Sharma, who is running as a Cox Green ward candidate for the upcoming local elections.
People from more parts of Maidenhead than expected showed up – Boyn Hill, Furze Platt and Bray as well as Cox Green.
They were a mixed bunch, aged as young as in their 20s and up to senior citizens, with about a 50/50 gender split.
The ‘big two’ topics of discussion were loneliness and isolation, with the stress of work or family life also being discussed, as well as struggles with bereavement.
“People talked about how have been lonely or isolated since COVID – some have been widowed or lost partners or other loved ones,” said Mr Sharma.
“They haven’t been able to get out or haven’t had the motivation to leave their homes.”
The event was ‘really positive’, he added, and ‘everyone said they wanted to come again.’
There are plans to hopefully hold the event monthly, perhaps going up to twice a month in the future.
