Windsor woman takes on volcano hike for £100,000 fundraiser

A Windsor woman is taking on a volcano hike, a jungle trek and a sea kayak to raise £100,000 for sick babies and children.

Paige Flockhart, 27, will be taking on the Island Challenge across Saint Lucia next week for the Sandals Foundation – a charity which helps children and babies in the Caribbean.

This year, the demanding four-day event includes a 12km run and 10km sea kayak, a half-marathon and a rainforest trek – culminating in a strenuous hike up Gros Piton, one of the island’s famous dormant volcanoes standing at more than 798 metres high.

Paige will be joined by a team of 30 participants from the UK.

She said: “Although I took part in the Island Challenge last year and I ran the London Marathon in April, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t getting nervous now.

“I am really looking forward to hiking Gros Piton as I’ve never done it before.”

“I’m also looking forward to visiting the Millennium Medical Complex in Saint Lucia to see firsthand where the funds we raise will go.”

Money raised from this year’s event will fund essential new equipment for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) in the Paediatric Division of Saint Lucia’s Millennium Medical Complex.

The unit cares for around 180 critically ill babies every year and stands as a symbol of hope for families experiencing difficult times.
