Churches to commemorate First World War centenary

Services to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War are set to be held by the Anglican and United Reformed Churches in Ruscombe, Twyford and Hurst.

On Monday, August 4, there will be a short service at 7pm at the war memorials in St Mary's Churchyard, Station Road, Twyford and St Nicholas Hurst Churchyard, Church Hill, Hurst.

At 8pm, there will also be a service at the war memorial in St James Churchyard, Southbury Lane, Ruscombe.

After the services in Twyford and Ruscombe, there will be displays in the respective churches of biographies of the men behind the names on the memorials.

St Nicholas Hurst will be open for quiet reflection and lighting of memorial candles after the service, followed at 8pm by a community sing along at the Castle Inn, Church Street, to raise money for charity Help the Heroes.

The United Reformed Church in Church Street, Twyford, will be open from 10am-4pm the same day for prayer and quiet reflection.
