A former pharmacy assistant who lived through both world wars has died aged 110.

Mary Bailey passed away peacefully at Holyport Lodge Nursing Home on Thursday where she had lived since 2009.

Born in Ross-on-Wye in 1902 Mary's niece Pat Downing, described her aunt as having a 'great spirit' and said she would be sadly missed.

"She was quite a character," added Pat who lives in Oxfordshire

"She always had an opinion about what was going on. She was really on the ball."

For about 25 years, Mary worked at a family-run chemist in Cippenham before moving to St Albans to live with her son Alan, a chief engineer for British Aerospace.

In December last year, Mary enjoyed a 110th birthday to remember at The Green home where she was visited by the former Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead, Cllr Colin Rayner.

She is survived by nieces Pat, Anne Warren and Carol Faruqui.

The funeral service will take place at Slough Crematorium on Thursday at 2pm.
