Wexham Park surgeon is a 'star turn' on the internet

A top consultant at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough has been elected president of a worldwide network that allows medical students everywhere to witness operations.

Ear, nose and throat specialist Chris Aldren was chosen by colleagues across the world to head the Live International Otolaryngology Network (LION www.lion-web.org) that broadcasts to 17,000 students, junior doctors and experienced surgeons.

Last month viewers logged on to watch live operations being performed by leading ear surgeons from places such as Utrecht, Hanover, Sienna, Sao Paolo, Dubai, Capetown and New York.

The only UK participant hospital was Slough's Wexham Park Hospital.  Surgeons gave a running commentary on the procedures they were performing and participants were able to email and Skype questions to the operating surgeons.

Chris Aldren said, “I feel honoured to have been elected as president by my international colleagues. The LION network is an invaluable tool for students and junior doctors who are just starting out in their career.”

He is the only surgeon in the UK operating in this group. His presidency is for two years.

He treats patients with all ENT conditions but has a specialist interest in hearing restoration for both adults and children with surgery ranging from grommets to more complex cases.
