Dazzling Christmas displays celebrating the 675th anniversary of the historic Order of the Garter can now be viewed by visitors to Windsor Castle.

A 25-foot-tall Nordmann Fir tree, grown and felled in Windsor Great Park stands in St George’s Hall, illuminated with 33,500 sparking lights and topped by a specially commissioned Garter Star to mark the anniversary.

Visitors will also see a glistening Christmas tree adorned with smaller Garter Stars in the Crimson Drawing Room.

Part of the Semi-State Rooms on the east side of the castle which were created as private apartments for George IV and are still used by members of the Royal Family for official entertaining are open for visitors throughout the winter months.

A 160-foot-long dining table in the Waterloo Chamber has been laid with porcelain from the Garter Service, including a design inspired by the Garter Star and the motto of the Order – Honi soit qui mal y pense (shame on him who thinks evil of it).

To mark the Coronation earlier in the year, three smaller trees also feature decorations embroidered with King Charles III’s cypher.

Garlands adorning the Grand Staircase will greet visitors as they come into the State Apartments, while festive wreaths and foliage embellish the gates and lampposts in the grounds of the castle.

After trip around the State Apartments, visitors can enjoy a treat from the Undercroft Café’s festive menu, which will be available throughout December.

The café also features a tree embellished with sparkling Garter Stars to mark the anniversary.

Christmas at Windsor Castle opened on Thursday, November 30 and will run until Monday, January 1 2024.
