A celebration of the magic of mathemetics saw school pupils take on fiendish problems at the beginning of May.

The Rotary Club of Maidenhead Thames and Cookham Dean Primary School teamed up to organise and host an annual Mathemagician school challenge for Year 4 pupils across the Royal Borough.

The event took place on Thursday, May 4 at the primary school from 4pm until 5.30pm.

Pupils from nine Royal Borough schools took part in the competition, where Year 4 students competed against each other in a fast-paced mathematical race.

Teams of three pupils put their maths, communication and teamwork skills to the test to solve a series of problems quickly and race to present their answers to the moderators.

The quickest team to present their answer would then be the first to receive the next problem.

The winners were Larchfield Primary School, who were awarded £20 of book vouchers, certificates, and t-shirts which read ‘I am a mathemagician’ for each member.

They also won the top prize of £50 for their school.

The Wessex Primary School team came second – they received £15 book vouchers and certificates.

Braywick Court Primary School came in third place, receiving £10 book vouchers and certificates.

All other team member received certificates of participation.

The Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead, Councillor Christine Bateson, and Rotary president, Grant Oliver, presented the prizes to the winning teams.

Stephan Stephan from the Rotary club, said: "We have yet again been overwhelmed by the schools interest generated, coming from as far afield as Ascot, but had to limit the numbers to fit in within the school hall.

“The event was very exciting, and the children were enthusiastic in their participation, with a very close finish.

“Plans are already underway for a similar competition for Year 2 students, to be hosted by Waltham St Lawrence School on May 18.”
