Jack Woodbridge says he still hasn’t ‘shaken off’ Holyport’s 1-0 defeat to CB Hounslow United at Green Lane Sports Ground, with the side dropping to the bottom of the Combined Counties Premier Division North.
The skipper had previously declared the importance of Saturday’s game given both teams’ position in the table. But regrettably for Port they were leapfrogged by their rivals thanks to Victor Montes’ solitary goal.
And, according to Woodbridge, they deserved to be too. Speaking to the Advertiser earlier this week, he gave a truthful review and said: “Being completely honest, I don’t know if we deserved anything from the match.
“We just weren’t at our usual standards unfortunately and just didn’t seem to be able to create anything to win the game or even get a point. They scored in the last minute whereas we never really looked like scoring unfortunately.
“The forwards weren’t getting the right service and a lot of our balls were either too far for them to chase or it was never really into their feet.
“It was just a bit disjointed from the first minute unfortunately – we didn’t look at the races and it’s surprising considering it was probably our biggest game of the season.
“I guess that’s only human nature to be honest and some players were feeling the pressure.”
Woodbridge added: “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned [about relegation]. But, I am also still feeling positive that we’ve got the squad to turn things around.
“I am hoping Saturday was a bit of a one-off game if we compare it to the last couple of months and performances. Hopefully, we can pick up a couple of wins to get off the bottom again.”
Derek Sweetman’s side will face Ascot United next on home turf, with the Yellamen winning 1-0 in the reverse fixture earlier this month (March 1).
“It’s a quick turnaround and it will be another tough game but hopefully, with being at home and on our pitch, we can play the conditions a bit better,” said Woodbridge.
“It will be fresh in the mind from the performance last week and knowing their style of play. Hopefully that will stand us in good stead and we can come away with something this week.”
