Khalsa Primary School Mela

Thousands of children and families were in Slough for an annual school summer fair.

Almost 5,000 visitors were expected for the yearly mela at Khalsa Primary School, in Wexham Road, Slough, which organisers predicted would raise up to £20,000 for the school, based on previous years.

Proceeds are also due to be used to make a £1,000 donation to Wexham Park Hospital.

Attractions at the event on Sunday included fairground rides, live music from Punjabi singer Ranjit Bawa, food stands, a book store and a stall raising awareness of the efforts of Sikh soldiers during the First World War.

Speaking on the day, Raminder Vig, the school’s principal, said: “They’ve all worked extra hard, the staff from the secondary and primary school, to organise this.

“Last year we had about 4,700 people here and we expect to have had about the same here again this time.

“We’ve got lots of stalls on, we’ve got the stage set-up – it’s a real community effort for Slough.

“And with everything that’s gone on this week with the referendum it’s a nice thing for the children and families to be able to come along to.
