Slough-based community group raises thousands for Ovarian Cancer Action

Members of a Slough-based community have raised thousands for a national ovarian cancer research charity through their efforts in raising awareness of ovarian cancer. 

To mark Ovarian Cancer Month, around seven members of the girls’ section of the Berkshire Bharath Community (BBC) walked during the month March as part of Ovarian Cancer Action’s Walk in her Name 2024 campaign. 

The girls walked mostly around the Burnham area, covering locations such as Burnham Beeches and Langley Park and completed a total of 850km. 

Suchitra Nomula, a member of the group, said the walk ‘went really well’. 

She explained the importance of raising awareness of ovarian cancer and stated that its symptoms are not as widely known as other cancers. 

“It can happen at any age, but very slow. We need to make sure that symptoms are identified early,” Suchitra said. 

The group also held an event at Britwell Community Centre earlier in the month to mark International Women’s Day and enjoy an evening of fun, food and music while learning about ovarian cancer and fundraising for Ovarian Cancer Action.

A total of 90 women attended the event which included an informative session outlining facts about ovarian cancer including what it is and what the symptoms are. 

Attendees were treated to various challenging activities including how many balloons they could blow and enjoyed plenty of homemade food. 

Entertainment on the evening was provided DJ Sai and singer Karunya. 

“They really had a fun time.

“The event was amazing. The food, the DJ, they enjoyed it,” Suchitra said.

The group is nearing its £2,000 target on its JustGiving page, with more than £1,700 raised so far for Ovarian Cancer Action.
