A female-only gym is set to open its doors at a leisure centre in Slough at the beginning of next month.
The gym is opening as part of a refurbishment at The Centre on Farnham Road in a bid to offer a new avenue for women to take part in physical activity.
A number of improvement works will take place at the leisure centre, including to the main gym and transforming a current space into a female-only gym.
The fitness facilities, which are managed by operator Everyone Active in partnership with Slough Borough Council, will re-open on Monday, April 10 following a short period of closure.
The female-only fitness studio will have a range of features including free weights, cardio and strength equipment.
In the main gym, a new track used for a range of cardio and strength-based exercises, new benches and CrossFit style equipment is set to be installed.
Everyone Active is hoping that the new female-only studio will aid in removing gender-related barriers to physical activity and help women feel both confident and comfortable while working out.
Luke Routhorn, contract manager at Everyone Active, said: “The Centre is an integral part of the Slough community and we’re excited to build on this by improving our current gym offering.
“I hope this investment into the facilities will be of great benefit to both existing and new members.
“We’ve had huge volumes of requests for a female-only area and I’m proud to see a vision soon become a reality.
“We’re aware of the socio-economic needs for women-only gyms and we hope this area will offer a welcoming space for local women who are unable to participate in mixed gender activities the chance to work out in a safe space.”
Councillor Sabia Akram, cabinet member for leisure, culture and community empowerment, said: “Slough has a fantastic range of leisure facilities and I’m pleased to see resident feedback has been taken into account in the provision of a female-only area in the gym.
“Keeping active is important to our health and wellbeing and anything that encourages that is a bonus.
“I look forward to seeing the works completed.”
