1980: Snooker fans in Maidenhead had a rare chance to see former World Snooker Champion Terry Griffiths.
The then-Masters champion played ex-English Billiards Champion Mark Wildman over seven frames at Maidenhead Autos & Stevensons showrooms in Bath Road, and won 5-2.
It was part of a series called Snooker Drive by United Dominions Trust, a car finance company.
1990: Engineering apprentices from Windsor and Maidenhead College raised about £1,000 for ITV’s Telethon through a sponsored raft marathon to Teddington.
The event nearly had to be cancelled when the engine from the college’s support boat was stolen, but fortunately New Taplow Paper Mill saved the day by providing a new boat and helping with the raft.
1995: Work on the pedestrianisation of Maidenhead High Street outside the Bear Hotel brought to light chalk foundations of the 13th century forerunner of St Mary’s Church.
Local historians Elias Kupfermann and Pam Knight took measurements and drawings before the hole was refilled.
1995: Reading FC chairman John Madejski and walkers including spoon-bender Uri Geller stopped off at the Shire Horse pub in Knowl Hill.
The group were making the 40-mile trip to Wembley by foot to watch Reading in the Division One play-offs.
1995: Youngsters from Boyn Hill Football Club spent the bank holiday weekend competing with members of FC Rungdorf – in Germany.
Thirteen boys from the club packed their bags to stay with football families from Maidenhead’s twin town of Bad Godesberg.
2000: Maidenhead town centre became an oasis of colour as hanging baskets popped up as part of the Borough in Bloom scheme.
The council was encouraging the town’s shops to put up hanging baskets to boost Maidenhead’s chances in the national Britain in Bloom competition.
A total of 460 hanging baskets went up – 20 more than the previous year.
2000: Some of the top names in football dropped into Maidenhead’s Megabowl to support a charity set up by Sir Alex Ferguson.
England stars David Beckham, Paul Scholes and brothers Gary and Phil Neville took time out from training for their Wembley match against Brazil, and were joined by England manager Kevin Keegan.
The event was to promote National Free Bowling Day, offering children the chance to bowl for free and raising money for the Elizabeth Hardie Ferguson Charitable Trust, set up in memory of Sir Alex’s mother.
