1985: Another successful Clarefield Court Hospital fete saw it move £4,000 closer to the £150,000 needed for a new leisure activities unit at the hospital.
More than 1,500 people turned out for the event, despite the cold
weather.
1990: Maidenhead Synagogue celebrated its 50th anniversary in the Royal Borough with a visit from Princess Margaret.
Her Royal Highness took part in a special thanksgiving – the first time she had attended a Jewish service.
1995: Adult education came under the spotlight when broadcaster Angela Rippon came to Maidenhead to launch a national initiative to promote learning.
As part of Adult Learners’ Week, colleges opened their doors to encourage mature students to go back to school.
East Berkshire College, which had a site in Boyn Hill Avenue, was one of the few in the country to have special facilities for mature students already in place.
1995: The annual Maidenhead Lions duck derby got off to a flying start as more than 3,000 yellow plastic ducks were released into the Thames at Boulters Lock.
More than 2,000 people gathered to cheer on their entries, while more than 50 stalls, a Punch and Judy show and fairground rides added to the carnival atmosphere.
2000: A junior school was turned into a car wash centre to raise money for a new library.
Furze Platt County Junior School was hoping to raise £60,000 for a new facility after the old library was converted to an IT suite.
Pupils, parents and staff turned out to raise £360 towards the target by cleaning and polishing more than 70 cars.
2000: Maidenhead MP Theresa May and Royal Borough mayor Sandra Hopkins joined more than 70 walkers who stepped out to pioneer a new trail to mark the year 2000.
The eight-and-a-half mile Millennium Walk, running from the remains of the medieval abbey in Hurley to Boulters Lock, was established by Maidenhead Civic Society and the East Berkshire Ramblers.
