1975: Maidenhead Evening Townswomen’s Guild made a gift of birds to the borough to replace some of the 80 that were slaughtered by vandals at the Ray Mill Island aviary the previous May.

The guild handed over six pairs of finches, two pairs of quail, and some budgerigars to Michael Weston, parks superintendent.

1980: Service above self, the motto of Rotary, was seen in action during the Rotarians’ 75th anniversary celebrations.

Members of Maidenhead Rotary Club and Rotaract, the young arm of Rotary, could be seen knee deep in mud, slime and debris as they tackled clearing York Stream.

1990: Guides around Maidenhead marked Thinking Day by playing games from overseas and sampling food from countries where the movement was strongly based.

Australian biscuits were enjoyed at 1st Pinkneys Green Guides, while Brownies from 1st Furze Platt cooked American food.

Meanwhile, the 4th Taplow and Hitcham Guides worked towards their radio communications badge by contacting guides overseas and in other parts of Britain.

1995: Ten lucky customers filled their trolleys with hundreds of pounds worth of shopping at Sainsbury’s in Maidenhead – and paid for it in 1869 prices.

The customers were winners of a competition run as part of the company’s 125th birthday celebrations – and paid an average of just £2 each for their goods.

2000: A firm in Maidenhead was doing its bit to help the British Olympic squad ahead of the Sydney Games by supplying badges for the team’s uniforms.

Fabb Bros Ltd, based in Risborough Road, was officially given the contract to supply 560 badges for the squad’s outfit and had until mid April to complete the order.

2000: A dentist who had been practising in Maidenhead for the past 40 years discovered he had an extra appointment – when staff and patients threw a surprise anniversary party for him.

David Everett had no idea the party had been organised when he turned up with friends at his Stoneleigh Dental Practice in St Luke’s Road.

He was greeted by staff and 90 patients as well as friends and family.
