1975: A dying 70ft high spruce in Cookham Rise with links to Gugliemo Marconi had to be felled.

It was from the tree in High Road that the Italian inventor conducted some of his first wireless telegraphy experiments in the UK in the 1890s – experiments that set him on the path to international fame.

1985: Television personality Terry Wogan attended a special party at the Thames Valley Adventure Playground, for which he was a patron.

The evening was arranged as a thank-you gesture to people who volunteered to ‘Be A Brick’ by making a personal commitment to hold a fundraising event each year in aid of the playground.

1990: Pupils at Oldfield School marked the end of their annual book week by dressing up as characters from their favourite children’s stories.

Long John Silver, Oliver Twist and Little Miss Muffet rubbed shoulders with Robin Hood, Fritz the Dragon and characters from Roald Dahl’s story The BFG.

1990: Holyport Memorial Hall played host to canine competitors at a dog show in aid of Pyrenean Mountain Dogs’ Rescue.

As well as many local competitors, the show attracted entries from Kent, Surrey and London – with more than 80 dogs put through their paces.

1995: A protest march, which started as a peaceful demonstration against the Criminal Justice Act ended in scuffles between campaigners and police in Windsor.

More than 500 people joined a mass trespass of Crown land at Windsor, organised by the Coalition Against The Criminal Justice Act. The act contained a controversial new aggravated trespass offence.

1995: Playdays at the Braywick Nature Centre proved a popular hit.

Organised by rangers at the centre, children between seven and 11 took part in two playdays designed to be fun and increase the children’s awareness of the environment.

2000: A talented photographer from Maidenhead swept the board at a national competition – winning three different awards.

Graham Holtom won a distinction and two commended certificates for his three wedding photographs in a competition run by Fuji for professional photographers in the country.

2000: Monsters from outer space flew in for jelly and ice cream at the Abacus After School Care Club.

A space party was organised to mark the group’s first anniversary, with more than 20 youngsters joining the celebrations at Boyne Hill CE Infant and Nursery School.
