Young wrestlers from a newly established academy have fought and grappled their way onto the podium at the recent Southern Regional Championships in Windsor.
The Windsor Wrestling Academy saw nine of its young athletes claim medals at the event, which took place in the town on Saturday (November 23).
The achievement is all the more impressive considering the academy was only opened last year, and the wrestlers have only been competing in the sport for a matter of months.
There were gold medals won by Leela Kaur Rakhra (24kg) in the u8s category and Hamara Uppal in the u8s 27kg category. Avneet Kaur Khull won a silver medal winner in the u8s class.
In the u11s category Mahi Uppal won a silver medal and there was a fourth placed finish for Bertille Norris (32kg).
In the u14s category, Sonaksha Naidoo and Matt Wells won gold while there were silver medals for Rares Alexandru Stanila, Garry Singh and Hershpreet Singh. Cristian-Stefan Datcu finished fourth.
Head coach Oksana Rakhra OLY said: “Our wrestlers displayed incredible fighting spirit and skill beyond their experience level.
“To achieve such results in such a short time is a testament to their hard work and dedication. The future is undoubtedly bright for Windsor Wrestling Academy.”
Academy Secretary Jatinder Rakhra echoed these sentiments, adding: “We are immensely proud of what the athletes have achieved. As a young club, these milestones inspire us to continue nurturing talent and growing the sport of wrestling in our community. This is just the beginning."
“With such remarkable early success, Windsor Wrestling Academy is poised to become a powerhouse in British wrestling.
“The club remains committed to its mission of fostering talent and building a supportive wrestling community.”
The Windsor Wrestling Academy was founded in 2023 with the aim of developing and inspiring young athletes through wrestling.
With a focus on skill, discipline and community, the club has quickly risen to prominence, winning the ‘club of the year’ award at the 2024 British Wrestling Community Awards.
