St Piran’s pupils impressed at the National Schools Biathlon Championships in Crystal Palace last week, with all exceeding expectations.

Nine pupils from the Maidenhead school qualified for the event, with Sam Nicholson finishing first overall in the boys' u9s event.

He was backed up by Ben Wilkinson and Oscar Spearing, who came fourth and 18th respectively to help the school win the team event and be crowned national champions.

In the u9s and u10s girls competition Maisie Fielder came 48th out of 100 competitors and Ione Gaskin was 45th. This was the first time they've performed in a national event so their displays were a source of immense pride for the school.

George Rotundo finished ninth in the u10s boys' event, a big improvement on his seeding place, performing well in both the pool and in the run.

Joe Carter was sixth overall in the u11s boys' competition, helping the team to victory. Dominic Adams was 10th in the same event, after a fine run and two second personal best in his swim. Henry Nurminen was 40th overall and Archie Ludford 56th, helping the school team retain the title they won in 2018.

Commenting on the pupils achievements Alix Burnage, Head of Swimming at St Piran's School, said: "Everyone looked happy with their performances and from a swimming perspective it was wonderful to see how well the children dealt with a 50m pool.  The weather held out for us and everyone managed to achieve personal best times on the track as well as in the pool."
