A Gymkhana racing driver is looking forward to the opportunity of a lifetime after thrilling a packed-out Wembley crowd at the weekend.
Adam Elder, 28, from Bourne End, drove his Nissan 214 200sx car to a series of victories at Wembley Stadium and will now take on the world’s best drivers – including Ken Block, Peter Solberg and Liam Doren – at the Gymkhana Grid event in Greece at the end of October.
The all-expenses trip to Greece and entrance into the top-level competition was Elder’s prize for burning up his opposition on the track at the Fueltopia competition in London.
The 28-year-old is relatively new to the sport, having only been competing for around two years, but already he’s made himself one of the best battle drivers in Europe.
Some 32 drivers came to compete for the chance to go to Greece and one by one they were ousted by Elder who made it to the top of the podium. Having shown off his skills in a demonstration event with motorcyclist Lee Bowers, Elder drove and drifted his car in the Barrel Sprint event.
He was second in qualifying and a clear win in his first battle put him through to the final eight. Elder then edged a closer contest to make the final four and kept his cool under pressure to take two more victories for the championship.
“What an amazing day,” he said.
“I had to push really hard to take the win. It’s given me the chance to go to Greece and race against the likes of Ken Block and Luke Woodham in the gymkhana grid final.
“It’s going to be a big step up for me but it could also be a life-changing moment because I might be able to take it on as a full-time career after that,” added the locksmith.
Adam is looking for local businesses or sponsors to help him fund his progress in the sport.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me so any help I’m able to get would be great,” he added.
“It would give them great exposure in term of (internet) views and would greatly help me to become a European champion.
Elder is currently the Barrel Sprints champion and ranked third in Europe in the gymkhana grid.
He’s ranked the best in the Formula G championship and is the undefeated title holder in SGK events in Scotland.
