Marlow Men's 1sts began life in the Men’s Conference West with a spirited display at Pound Lane on Saturday, narrowly losing 3-2 to a strong Bath Buccaneers side in front of a lively home crowd.
Freshly promoted after last season’s success, Marlow made a dream start when newcomer Jayden Zamler found the net just four minutes in. The hosts looked composed and competitive, matching Bath’s intensity through much of the first half.
But the tide began to turn after the break as Bath tightened their grip on the midfield and struck twice to edge ahead. Despite Marlow throwing bodies forward in search of an equaliser, a controversial penalty stroke handed Bath a 3-1 lead.
Refusing to lie down, Marlow rallied again, and Callum White—returning after a two-year absence—fired home from a penalty corner to give the home fans hope. A late surge saw the team camped in Bath’s circle, but the equaliser just wouldn’t come.
Despite the result, there was plenty to be optimistic about. Marlow now look ahead to another home fixture against Clifton Robinsons (Bristol) on Sunday at 2:45pm.

Earlier in the day, Marlow Women’s 1sts faced their own tough test against Team Bath Buccaneers, suffering a 3-0 defeat in their season opener.
Bath came out strong, forcing an early save from goalkeeper Alys Ramm, who was in excellent form throughout. Marlow responded with slick attacking play, including a flowing move down the right involving Jess Rees-Gray and Lottie Porter, whose cross was inches away from being tapped in by Alice Godfrey at the back post.
Bath eventually broke the deadlock in the 25th minute and nearly doubled their lead soon after, only to be denied again by Ramm. Marlow continued to press in the second half, with Porter coming close after a pacey breakaway, but Bath’s defence held firm.
The visitors added two more goals—one from a tight angle in the 46th minute and another late on—to seal the win, but the scoreline didn’t fully reflect Marlow’s determination and attacking intent.
They’ll look to bounce back next weekend when they welcome Clifton Robinsons 2s to Pound Lane on Saturday at 3 PM.
