1978: Maidenhead’s Jubilee Clock Tower took a step into the future with the news it would be fitted with £1,000-worth of electro-mechanical parts.

Edward Dunstall, who had looked after the clock in Station Approach for the previous five years, was tasked with looking into replacing the old mechanical works.

1978: Pupils at Littlewick Green Infants School did their bit for Christian Aid Week – which had a water theme.

To mark the occasion, the children gathered around the old well on the green and a service was conducted by the Vicar of Littlewick, the Rev Bruce Hartnell.

The children then led parents and visitors in the laying of coins in front of the well. A total of £20 was raised for Christian Aid.

1978: The 1st Hurley Girl Guide Company received its own company flag after its formation in January of that year.

It was bought with a donation from a villager, who wished to remain anonymous, and was dedicated at Hurley Parish Church.

1983: Horoscope followers turned out in force to meet breakfast TV astrologer Russell Grant.

The BBC presenter was at the Opus One record shop in King Street to promote his new record No Matter What Sign You Are.

1983: Clarefield Court Hospital raised £3,200 from its annual fete.

More than 1,000 people attended – making it one of the best supported charity events in the area.

Money raised went towards a therapeutic pool costing an estimated £50,000.

1988: Sun and fun were the two main ingredients that made for a highly successful fundraising event organised by All Saints and Boyne Hill Schools’ Association at Maidenhead Thicket.

It was the schools’ fourth Family Fun Run, which attracted a record total of 158 entrants in six competitive races, followed by a mass jog.

1998: The spectators and riders in the Burnham Donkey Derby refused to let the grey skies spoil their enjoyment of the fundraising event.

The 7th donkey derby event, organised by the Rotary Club of Burnham Beeches, started with a parade and featured a 120-yard race track.
